2009-10 Report

All UCAP students have repeated at least one grade prior to enrolling at UCAP. Most students have also exhibited many characteristics associated with being at serious risk of dropping out of school, such as absenteeism or negative behavior resulting in suspension. Many have family problems. Beyond School programs extend learning time and engage students in academic, cultural and recreational activities.

They are essential to our success: UCAP met all academic standards and attendance targets for 2009-2010!

School Demographics

  • 79% = Enrolled from Providence, 11% from Central Falls, 10% from Cranston

  • 52% = Male, 48% = Female

  • 63% = Hispanic %, 19% = African American, 11% = Caucasian, 4% = Asian, 3% = Native American

  • 57% = Students residing in a household in which English is not the primary language

  • 89% = Student body eligible for Free and Reduced lunch

Beyond School Activities

  • 140 = Every UCAP student participated in at least one activity. 76 – the average number of hours each student spent involved in out-of-school-time programs.
  • 57 = The number of students who participated in AS220’s visual and performance-based art activities during our first year of a very successful partnership.
  • 38 = The number of one-day field trips for students and families.
  • 35 = The number multi-week recreational, academic, and /or enrichment activities offered
  • 15 = The number of parents who completed a 30-week literacy class held at UCAP and run by Dorcas Place in the 3rd year of this effective program. Parents and children eat dinner together, and then children are engaged in an activity while the parents study. Themes from our student curricula are incorporated into the adult program so parents can help their children.
  • Monthly parent engagement activities included a family trip to Escobar Farm Maze, Roger Williams Lantern Spectacular, movie nights, and a Potluck dinner and Showcase of student work.
  • Academic and enrichment activities included Homework Club, Take A Challenge, Saturday School, Basketball Hall of Fame, and a trip to the Mystic Aquarium.
  • Arts and culture activities included choir, dance classes, museum trips, and zoo visits.
  • Recreational activities included basketball, bowling, hiking, ice-skating, flag football, Pilates, volleyball, street hockey, swimming, and weight lifting, and a one-day skiing trip.
  • New programs this year included Robotics and making Doggie Quilts to donate to the animal shelter.

All programs offered positive adult role modeling of appropriate problem solving and conflict resolution skills, as well as academic or recreational aspects.

During the 2010-2011 school year we will focus on the following initiatives:

  • Expand our collaboration with our newest partner, AS220.
  • Implement an internal self-assessment form for administrators and teachers for sustainable and continuous program improvement.
  • Plan for and conduct periodic meetings for afterschool staff: 3 meetings for participating UCAP teachers, youth workers, and program providers from community based organizations.
