Applying to The UCAP School
2017-2018 School Year
The UCAP School seeks to intervene in the education of middle school students who are at the risk of dropping out of school. We serve students in grades 7, 8, and 9. At UCAP, students are provided with the support, guidance, and structure to develop the skills, attitudes, and habits that will enable them to graduate from high school. We are the only middle school in RI providing students who have repeated an earlier grade or are achieving limited success the opportunity of accelerated promotion in grade and/or skills.
Students applying to The UCAP School generally fit into one or more of the following categories. Please ask us if you have questions about a specific student and how we might be able to help – we are very open to working with counselors and families to determine if The UCAP School is a good fit.
Students currently in 6th or 7th grade who are a year (or more) older than age appropriate grade. These students will be given first preference. The majority of our applications come from current 6th graders entering 7th grade next year who are old for their grade level.
Students who will be entering 7th or 8th grade next year who are in age appropriate grade (have not repeated) but who have failing grades in math or English, low overall grades, or are struggling in a large school environment.
Students who will be entering 9th grade, regardless of age/grade level, who are deemed by counselors and teachers as needing greater preparation for high school.
- Special Education and ELL students are considered on a case-by-case basis with consideration given to the services each student needs.
- Spaces are very limited and the students who can benefit most from The UCAP School’s rare opportunity are eager to do the hard work required to accelerate in grade / skill level.
