OUR MISSION

UCAP seeks to intervene in the lives of adolescents at risk of dropping out.

We strive to create a supportive community that motivates students with a coherent, relevant and challenging academic program that will help them attain the academic and social skills necessary for success in high school and in life.

We stress the importance of achieving at high levels by taking responsibility, setting goals, working hard, taking risks, and having fun.

Accelerating America is now on Amazon.com

"Accelerating America," the award-winning documentary about UCAP, is now available on-line to watch or download (for a small fee).  Currently, the film is on Amazon and it will be available from other sites as well.

The filmmaker, Timothy Hotchner, followed three students over the course of a full school year.  He quickly gained the kids trust, and then access even into their homes.  His amazing footage captures the challenges these kids face as they struggle to focus on taking advantage of UCAP's program to help them make up a grade.

Please spread the word to anyone you know who is interested in urban education, alternative education, models that work, inspiring people, or just great documentaries!  Keep in mind that Rob is happy to talk to your group or class about the school and our hopes for replication so that new schools can expand our reach and serve more kids.

"Accelerating America" is a compelling film about a school that poses a solution to the problem of kids dropping out - a serious and persistent problem that has the attention of President Obama and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.

YOU MUST SEE THIS FILM IF YOU, TOO,
CARE ABOUT THIS ISSUE.

"Accelerating America" won Grand Prize for Documentaries at the RI International Film Festival last August, and Special Jury Prize for Documentaries at the Seattle Film Festival last June.  It has been screened since at the St. Louis International Film Festival, in NY at the Museum of Arts and Design, at the Jane Pickens Theater in Newport, and at Roger Williams University.

On Line Auction & Annual Walk-A-Thon      Success!

Our on-line auction featured cruises, an African Safari, books and CD's, restaurant gift certificates, fabulous jewelry, and much much more.  More than $10,000 in bids had been placed by the close of the auction on May 10.  Sponsorships from AAA of Southern NE, Financial Innovations, Statewide Plumbing, Case Construction, All City Towing, Aaronson Lavoie Streitfeld Diaz & Co, and BTS Tire brought in another $2,000, and our Walk-A-Thon mailing added another $3,000.

Meanwhile, UCAP kids raised more than $1,300 from friends, family, and neighbors.

The net proceeds should exceed $14,000, all of which will benefit the Beyond School programs our kids need to succeed.

Joanne Woodward Attends NY Screening

Oscar-winning actress and widow of Paul Newman was among the audience of 130 who lauded filmmaker Tim Hotchner and UCAP's Director Rob DeBlois when "Accelerating America" was screened at a private reception in New York on April 7.

The newly re-opened Museum of Arts and Design, located at 2 Columbus Circle, hosted the event.  Other luminaries in attendance were author Gay and publisher Nan Talese, actor (and Brown Alum) James Naughton, Broadway star of South Pacific Kelli O'Hara and her singer-songwriter husband Grege Naughton.

They were joined by Fund for UCAP Board members Greg Renza and his wife Lauren Marcello, and Board Chair Connie Worthington.  Also out in force were the Cranwell friends who help raise funds to replicate the UCAP model.  The "Cranes" included Michael Brosnan, Peter Dougherty, Rich Horan, James Phelan, and Michael Rooney.

This gala event even made the New York Post's entertainment section!

About UCAP
UCAP is the only public school in the US dedicated to accelerated education for at-risk students.  All UCAP students have repeated at least one grade before entering UCAP. Unless they catch up, they are at serious risk of dropping out. At UCAP, they can make up a grade and go to high school with the academic and social skills they need to persist to graduation. This unique school has a proven solution to the epidemic of children school dropping out of school. Click here to visit UCAP's websiteUCAP is an alternative independent public school, founded in 1989 to serve students in 7th-9th grades who have been retained at least one year, putting them at great risk of dropping out of school.

UCAP uses an innovative accelerated program that allows students to complete three years of requirements in just two years.  The UCAP school experience places an emphasis on accelerated learning through an academically rigorous curriculum and student empowerment through a focus on high expectations, responsibility, and developing relationships.
Currently, districts participating in the UCAP Collaborative include Providence, Central Falls and Cranston.  The school has been recognized both locally and nationally as a highly effective and innovative school for students who need alternatives to large public schools.
