Board of Directors
Like every public school, The UCAP School must adhere to the policies and procedures of the Rhode Island Department of Education. However, as an independent public school and a collaborative, UCAP contracts with three different school districts. The Board of Directors is made up of those cities’ school superintendents who oversee UCAP School Director, Dr. Michael Finley.
The Board meets regularly to review school policies and curricula, set tuition rates, and evaluate the director. The Board of Superintendents is keenly aware of the long-term savings they achieve with The UCAP School: every student who accelerates spends one less year in the public school system.
An Advisory Board of community and education leaders provides further guidance in these areas.
(The Fund for UCAP, which raises money for all programs not supported by the per-pupil tuition paid by the districts, is a separate organization with its own Board.)

The Fund for UCAP is a private, non-profit organization established by thoughtful, insightful, generous individuals who believe in and support UCAP’s mission. The board is responsible for raising and managing funds to benefit The UCAP School and its students, including funding UCAP’s Beyond U.
In 2013, the Fund successfully completed the Expanding the Possibilities Capital Campaign which supported the building of, the Annex, which houses a science lab, arts studio and gymnasium at The UCAP School. Today, the Annex serves as the hub for Beyond U programs.
The Fund also supports other student programs, capital needs, and special initiatives identified by the boards of The UCAP School and the Fund for UCAP. At least two members of The Fund for UCAP Board sit on the UCAP’s advisory board.
