"Accelerating America"
Awarded Grand Prize for Documentaries
at the
Rhode Island International Film Festival

RIIFF Group
Providence, RI August 12, 2008 -

The Rhode Island screening of
"Accelerating America," Timothy Hotchner's  documentary about the Urban Collaborative Accelerated Program  (UCAP) by filmmaker Tim Hotchner, was nearly sold-out last Thursday, August 7th when it was shown at the Columbus Theater in Providence.  The film, which was part of the Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIIFF), took Grand Prize for Documentaries.  It was one of seventy-four feature documentaries shown.  Pictured above are the three students featured in the film with Hotchner and the school's director: (l-r) Rob DeBlois (seated) Jason, America, Tim Hotchner, Yazmine.

The film had previously been awarded Special Jury Prize for Documentaries at the Seattle International Film Festival in June, and, as in in Seattle, the Rhode Island audience's reaction was heart-felt and heartwarming.

Hotchner, UCAP director Rob DeBlois, and the three students featured - Yazmine, Jason and America, took part in a Q & A after the screening. America, Yazmine and Jason were greeted with sustained applause.  The questions asked reflected the audience's appreciation for the growing problem of youngsters dropping out of school, and the successful solution that is being offered by the Urban Collaborative.

Here's what Providence Journal columnist Bob Kerr had to say...

"This movie should be seen by a bunch of people.  If you have any concern for the high dropout rate in urban schools, if you wonder even for a second just where those dropouts might end up, or if you just want a close, honest look at the way too many kids are living, then you will want to see Accelerating America." PLEASE NOTE:  Hotchner is seeking a national distributor for the film and until that has been resolved, the film will not be available to the general public for purchase as a DVD.  However, UCAP will be arranging several private screenings in the Boston area and NYC.  We will send out e-notices with details when those are scheduled.
